Elements of Culture

Climate is one of five culture elements. In addition to climate, a culture is made up of:

  • Cultural Values: Shared beliefs about the desired outcomes, priorities and acceptable methods for achieving such goals.
  • Norms: Cultural standards for behavior: “The way we do things around here.”
  • Peer Support: Assistance from co-workers, family and friends.
  • Organizational Supports and Cultural Touch Points. Organizational policies, procedures and programs are examples of organizational support systems. Leadership modeling, rewards, training, communication systems, and the orientation of new people are examples of organizational support and cultural touch points.

Although this course focuses specifically on climate, it is important to understand that the climate does not function independently of other cultural factors and broader economic realities. For example, a good climate will also be determined by adequate pay, safe working conditions and job schedules that allow for the balance of work, rest and play. More information about the larger cultural context is available in the Culture Change Planner
