Community Building Actions

The following list of community building strategies have been effective in past efforts to address work climate. Pick those that are best suited to your setting.

• Keep an organizational database of hobbies, special interests, and living places. Then, link people with common experiences.
• Hold special community building events such as outdoor adventure activities, films, lectures and charity functions. Then, ask that participants share their reactions to these experiences.
• Bring people together in times of crisis and provide ways they can help one another.
• Post and celebrate special milestones such as marriages, births and educational achievements. Give people the opportunity to discuss what their milestones mean to them.
• Encourage show and tell.
• Provide for a "catching up" on personal news before meetings.
